Breeding horses: Expert advice for first-timers
The breeding season has officially started, and the quality of horses being bred in Scandinavia, at the highest level, has never been stronger and is a considerable industry. But how do you proceed if you want to breed your own offspring? Which concerns regarding welfare should you be aware of and how can you produce an offspring that suits you and your needs?

We have talked to Vegard Brekke, General Manager at Stutteri B, one of Norway’s leading Studs for breeding and breeding advice. There are many things to consider if you want to be a part of the whole breeding process. Vegard tells us that they begin every project with a gap analysis to determine wants and needs.
“It’s important to map out what results the breeder is looking for and to whom they are breeding. The horse should always be a good match for the planned rider and live up to the desired ambitions.”
At Stutteri B they begin the process assessing the mare’s pedigree and whether there are special achievements that should be taken into consideration. The team studies the exterior of the mare, preferably in combination with photos and films where the mare is in sport.
“Based on the information obtained and the breeder’s wants and needs for the offspring, we usually present a selection of three recommended stallions. To give breeding-advice solely based on the pedigree is not something we recommend.”
Physical and mental health
As a breeder, it’s crucial that you possess knowledge about the different pedigrees and how they perform in the sport. Mental health and psyche are just as important as the physical part. A focus on temperament to improve the horse’s rideability, as well as better mental health, is always key at Stutteri B.
“Extreme characteristics can quickly overshadow the health perspective. Therefore, we have discarded stallions with a bad temperament and serious illnesses from our range.”
After choosing the stallion that matches the breeder’s preferences, Vegard Brekke helps clients find the most suitable breeding station and veterinarian. They also facilitate the logistics with semen shipments, which makes the whole prosses easier for clients.
Horse welfare first
Everyone who have met Vegard knows that he is a true horseman. The horse’s welfare always comes first. Core values such as openness and transparency are anchored in all their services, and they seek partners with the same approach to horse welfare. Everything from veterinarians, breeding stations, riders and suppliers are carefully selected.
“It is vital that both owner and horse experience a safe environment. We do our utmost to take care of the mare and the offspring’s welfare. Afterall, we are dealing with living creatures, and with that comes a great responsibility.”
